The Multicultural Competence and the LGBTQ+ Client: Are We Ready? workshop will seek to provide social sector professionals with an opportunity to explorediscuss, and strengthen their multicultural competence, as well as increase their awareness of the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community. The objective is to improve the effectiveness of service providers when working with members of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer + (LGBTQ+) communities and their families.

    Date/Time: Friday January 21st 9am-4pm

Cost: $125 per person (IAC Bursaries available for IAC Members)

    Trainer: Letitia R. Washington, B.A., M.A

    Workshop Detail
The topic of multiculturalism and the LGBTQ+ community is important since we are seeing a rapid shift in the landscape of our schools and the wider community. Now, more than ever, young people and adults are proud to identify as LGBTQ+ and it is incumbent upon helping services and professionals to understand the factors which contribute to their emotional health and mental health wellbeing. The identification of gaps in services, as well as ways in which we, as professionals and clinicians, can increase our effectiveness are important points of consideration. This workshop will alert participants to what the research suggests regarding the specific emotional and mental health consideration for LGBTQ+ persons, ways in which we can support them and their families and more.

    The workshop will cover:

    • A relevant discussion of the clinical research related to this population.
    • Discussion of the unique emotional and mental health needs of LGBTQ+ persons.
    • Understanding the sexual identity process.
    • Understanding the definition, importance, and scope of multicultural competence.
    • Consideration of the 4 Quadrants of Multicultural Competence.
    • An exploration of personal attitudes, beliefs, and biases (transference and countertransference).
    • Identification of the terms associated with the LGBTQQIP2SAA (and more) acronym.
    •  Discussion, development, and application of basic active listening skills.

    The 6-hour workshop aims to:

    • To increase knowledge about the complex components of gender and sexuality
    • To support providers examining their own assumptions and potential biases concerning LGBTQ+ people
    • To increase awareness of the impact social, cultural, and generational factors can have on the physical and mental wellbeing of members of the LGBTQ+ community
    • To increase the cultural competency of providers when engaging with members of the LGBTQ+ community
    • To increase the ability for providers to support the process of sexual and gender identity development.
To increase the ability of providers to support the families of LGBTQ+ people
